I grew up in the hills of western Pennsylvania during a time when kids could roam the woods all day without worrying about strangers or ticks. My family raised vegetables, small fruits, nuts and a variety of animals on our acre of land. Our home was surrounded by farms and woodland, and I loved both aspects of country life. As an adult I’ve lived on a variety of country properties, from a one-acre plot to a 4-acre homestead and a horse farm.
These experiences inspired and informed my books: A Farm Heritage Album: Fifty Years of Westmoreland County Farming History Told Through the Photographs and Stories of Those Who Lived Them and two editions of The Complete Homestead Planner. My articles and tips about horses and rural life have also appeared in Draft Horse Journal, EQUUS, Fine Gardening, Pennsylvania Farmer and Mother Earth News. I was quoted as a source in a Hobby Farms article about saving seeds.
